Ghada Karmi was born in Jerusalem and left Palestine for England in 1949. She practised as a doctor for many years working as as specialist in the health of migrants and refugees. She held a number of research appointments on Middle Eastern politics and culture at the School of Oriental and African Studies in the Universities of Durham and Leeds. From 1999 to 2001 she was an Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, where she led a major project on Israel-Palestinian reconciliation.

Currently Ghada Karmi is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter.

Her most recent book Married to Another Man was higly acclaimed by critics. It's about Israel’s Dilemma in Palestine following the first Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897 when the idea of establishing a jewish state in Palestine was first mooted, the rabbis of Vienna dispatched two representatives to investigate the suitability of the country for such a purpose.
