The Norwich and District Branch of the United Nations Association is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its founding in 1948 and are very pleased to host a talk on this vital subject. The world is rapidly reaching the point at which oil production must start to reduce year on year, with dramatic consequences for our economy, food supply, and way of life.  Transition Norwich aims to facilitate a community response to the twin problems of Peak Oil and Climate Change. Norwich & District UNA are fully supportive of their efforts. So please do try to come to this lunchtime meeting.

+
==Charity event for Asylum seekers, Friday, Nov 28th, 7pm, IPSWICH, St John’s United Reformed Church==
 +

 +
The charity event is aimed to raise awareness about people who have
 +
had to seek Asylum in Britain. The evening will be specifically
 +
looking at what happens to some refugees’ identity when making the
 +
transition from their home country into British culture and society.
 +

 +
The evening will be a mix of different art forms of communication
 +
including film, poetry, singing and dance.
 +
We have got some wonderful performers and speakers; Godiva Apedo, Ele
 +
Scott, Mr. Gee, Nawroz Oramari, Mqhubeli Timbha and Jackie Rigden.
 +

 +
Godiva Apedo is a very talented dancer who has had a passion to
 +
perform from her early years and was in the original cast of the Lion
 +
King at the Lyceum theatre Covent Garden. Godiva trained at Rambert
 +
School of Ballet and Contemporary dance and from there has gone on to
 +
tour with companies internationally.
 +

 +
Ele Scott is another talented dancer who enjoys all forms of dance but
 +
especially loves contemporary. Ele also is the lead singer of well
 +
known Suffolk band ‘The Pursuit’. The band has become so successful
 +
over the years that Town 102 even made them the group to have as a
 +
package wedding prize in 2007.
 +

 +
Mr. Gee is a gifted poet who seems to be able to turn his talent to
 +
anything…radio presenting for BBC’s Bespoken Word, performing comedy
 +
alongside Russell Brand, producing; the list goes on. Mr. Gee has just
 +
finished performing at ‘Into the Hoods’ at the Novello Theatre, Covent
 +
Garden. One of Mr. Gee’s poems will be played at the event.
 +

 +
Nawroz Oramari is a Kurdish singer who incorporates all languages that
 +
he has come across in his lifetime through his lyrical work. Nawroz
 +
describes himself as a refugee from birth as his family had to escape
 +
war and the genocide when he was a baby. In his early years Nawroz
 +
became a leading figure in the movement for revolution. Nawroz used
 +
his
 +
singing as a form of communication to make the nation aware of the
 +
political instability and violent regimes.
 +

 +
Mqhubeli Timbha is a refugee who has fled from Zimbabwe. Mqhubeli was
 +
forced to seek Asylum after he was assaulted by the armed thugs of the
 +
ruling party; Zanu-PF. Mqhubeli was detained in Hammondsworth and
 +
there
 +
he took part in a hunger strike. The hunger strike was driven in
 +
protest against the deportation of Zimbabweans who would have to go
 +
back to face Mugabe’s regime.
 +
Mqhubeli will be inviting the audience to ask questions about his
 +
experiences of seeking Asylum in Britain.
 +

 +
Jackie Rigden has been an active volunteer visitor of centres in the
 +
South of London for almost ten years.
 +
Jackie will be speaking at the event highlighting the process one has
 +
to undergo to seek Asylum. Jackie will also be unraveling the meaning
 +
behind certain terminologies that may be used in the media that can be
 +
misinterpreted.
 +

 +
The event is being held at St John’s United Reformed Church, 1 Cowper
 +
Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP4 5JD on Friday 28th November 2008. It
 +
will
 +
start at 7pm (doors will be opening at 6.30pm). Refreshments will be
 +
available. (£5 per ticket)

==Rat Race on Buy Nothing Day, Saturday, Nov 29th 2008, 2.30pm, St. Andrews's Plain==
 +
ROLL UP, ROLL UP - RAT RACE, RAT RACE
 +

 +
On Saturday 29th November it’s BUY NOTHING DAY - time for the 2009 Norwich
 +
City Centre Rat Race! The race will highlight the moral, environmental and
 +
personal consequences of consumerism, and also challenge the city centre’s
 +
most unethical corporations. It would be great if as many people came
 +
along as possible!
 +

 +
Rat masks and 'go faster', 'work harder' signs will be provided and it
 +
would be good if people could dress smart (ish). We don’t know how long it
 +
will last but probably an hour or two of racing, with lots of rest breaks.
 +

 +
Here’s what you need to know …
 +
DATE - SATURDAY 29th NOVEMBER
 +
MEET - ST ANDREW'S PLAIN (opposite Cinema City), ST ANDREW'S STREET, NR3 1AU.
 +
TIME - 2.30PM.
 +

 +
We all know that corporate consumer culture creates major social and
 +
environmental problems. From day one, we're sold the story that the more
 +
stuff we buy, the better off we'll be. But deep down, we also know that we
 +
can't buy happiness. So, let’s take a holiday from the consumer rat race.
 +
See you all Saturday 24th.

 +

 +
Cluster bombs cause predictable and unacceptable harm to civilians, both at the time of use and for many years after.  It is my strong belief that these weapons are morally unacceptable.
 +

 +
'''The Convention on Cluster Munitions – Explained'''
 +

 +
The Convention on Cluster Munitions was negotiated and adopted at the Dublin Diplomatic Conference on 30 May 2008 by 107 states.  It is a legally binding international treaty that forbids the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster bombs. The Convention will be signed in Oslo on 3 December 2008.  No changes can be made to the wording of the treaty.
 +

 +
The Convention bans cluster bombs, with no exceptions or period of time in which countries can continue to use them after the ban.  Stockpiles must be destroyed within eight years and contaminated land cleared within 10. The Convention sets a new standard for assisting victims and protecting their human rights. States must provide medical, financial and psychological support to survivors and all people affected by cluster bombs.
