If you want to join us, do come! Bring food to share. NB 7pm start not 7:30.

 +
*Keir Hardie Ceilidh – Wed. 16th, 8pm, Keir Hardie Hall
 +
Ceilidh dances are held at the Keir Hardie Hall on the third Wednesday of each month between September and May and feature some of the best ceilidh bands in East Anglia. The first dance this season is being jointly promoted by TN and the band is Ethel’s Cats. All the dances are called and are preceded by a short walk through – so no experience is needed – but a good sense of humour helps. The music is lively and the dances are quite energetic.
 +

 +
John from the TN Waste group writes: “So why is TN having a Ceilidh? A ceilidh brings strangers together to have fun, but needs them to work together and learn new skills – it is a great experience to be part of a room full of people all moving together to the music from a skilled band. Ceilidh music and dances are based on the traditions from our past but each caller and band adapts the dances and brings in new musical elements. We hope you can see the parallels to the work of the Transition movement!” Tickets on the door £4 (£3.50 conc). 8pm Wednesday 16 September. Keir Hardie Hall, St Gregory’s Alley, NR2 1ER. http://www.reeldance.org.uk or phone John (01603 812472)

== Burston Strike School Rally, Sun Sept. 6th, 11am to 4.30pm, Burston near Diss==
 +
Join us at Burston to commemorate the longest strike in history, and to celebrate the people who continue to fight for trade union rights, working class education, democracy in the countryside, and international solidarity.
 +

 +
In April 1914, Kitty and Tom Higdon, loved and respected teachers at Burston Village School, were sacked for their socialist and trade union views.
 +

 +
The pupils walked out in support and from then until 1939 the villagers and the Higdons, ran the 'Strike School', providing an education for local children.
 +

 +
Times change, but the struggle in rural areas for economic and social justice continues.
 +

 +
This year at Burston we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution, with music, speakers, and special children's activities.
 +

 +
Speakers include Tony Benn, and Luis Marron (Cuban Embassy)

==Iftar (break fast), September 12th, 7:22 pm, Forum Amphitheatre==
 +
 +
The UEA Islamic Society & Norwich & Norfolk Muslim Association invite you to have Iftar (break fast) in Norwich city centre in the forum amphitheatre on 12th of Sept 2009 at 7:22pm.
 +
 +
Ramadan, the month of fasting, is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and lasts either 29 or 30 days. Because Muslims follow a lunar calendar, the official beginning which was on 22nd August this year, occurs 11 days earlier each year.
 +
Fasting or Sawm, is practiced during the entire month, during which time eating, drinking (including water) and all bodily pleasures are forbidden during the hours of daylight.
 +
 +
When hungry and thirsty, Muslims remember the suffering of the poor. There is an increased compassion for those in need of the basic necessities of life, a sense of self-purification and reflection and a renewed focus on spirituality. Muslims appreciate the feeling of togetherness shared by family and friends throughout the month. It is an opportunity to practice self-control and to cleanse the body and mind. Perhaps the greatest benefit is the annual lesson in self restraint and discipline that can carry forward to all other aspects of a Muslim’s life including work and education.
 +
 +
Available to all who come that day:
 +
 +
Iftar (light food and drinks), leaflets about Islam including Ramadan,
 +
People whom you can ask about Islam.

===Carbon Chronicles Opera, Sat. Sept 19th, 7pm, United Reform Church===
 +
Carbon Chronicles is a participatory opera blending science, myth and politics. It is intended to provoke discussion and inspire action to reduce our dependency on a petroleum-based, exploitative global system, in order to live sustainably in a low-carbon society. The story is about elemental beings and their evolution into resources (minerals and fossil fuels) exploited by humans, with the consequent planetary crisis and climate chaos. The ending is decided by the participants.
-
After spending the night of 21st/22nd September in Norwich, we will cycle down to Bungay, a Transition Town, http://transitiontowns.org/Bungay/Bungay to take part in their car-free day.
+
The opera is written so that anyone at any age can take part, even without prior musical experience, with time before each performance to learn simple tunes and choruses, and to make musical instruments from recycled and 'found' materials. A small core group will tour the piece around Britain and Ireland, collaborating with the transition town network and other groups, and working with local musicians. A national gathering in 2010 will bring together all participating groups to recreate a grand story of our times.

==Produced in Norfolk at the Norfolk Food Festival, Sept. 19th - Oct. 4th==
 +
[[Image:Taste_the_view.jpg|150px|left]]
 +
Twenty artisan food and drink producers are coming together later this month to celebrate what is grown in the Norfolk countryside and the skilled local people who make it, by giving away free samples of their produce in Norwich and beyond. The Produced In Norfolk Taste the View campaign offers free opportunities to try Norfolk ice cream or sample local pickle, taste local venison or sip real ale. A trip outside of Norwich offers invitations to watch products being made, enjoy farm safaris and feed the animals that go into the food we buy.  Coordinated by the Norwich based social enterprise Produced In Norfolk, which works to protect local skills and jobs, the campaign runs during British Food Fortnight as part of the Norfolk Food Festival  Full details of free tasters in Norwich and around the County can be found at http://www.producedinnorfolk.com and
