| THE GREAT NORFOLK ANTI-CUTS DEMO
| (SATURDAY 4 DECEMBER)
| |||
| The Norfolk Coalition Against The Cuts demo on Saturday 4 December looks set to be big. The biggest demonstration in Norfolk for a long time!
| |||
| Service users, public sector workers, unions, pensioners, community groups and many, many supporters will demand - and spell out - ALTERNATIVES to the slash-and-burn plans of the Government and Norfolk County Council.
| |||
| There is no need for the cuts: the government can instead: cut bankers' bonuses, collect billions of pounds in unpaid taxes from the tax avoiders and evaders, put a Robin Hood tax on financial speculation, raise more tax from those earning over £100,000, cut spending on warfare and spend it on welfare; put people into work not slash jobs and tax revenues (see the attached leaflet). This would raise more than the £80 billion the government is planning to cut.
| |||
| |||
| Already, many organisations are reporting interest in the 4 December march - from many people who have never marched or demonstrated before.
| |||
| Organisers are busy planning the march and rally to make maximum public and media impact with :
| |||
| A colourful, diverse, parade with placards galore and music.
| The march will be led by 100 women - at the sharp end of the cuts - with their own provocative banners and messages.
| A lively, inspiring rally with national speakers and lots of local messages too.
| A report from the national conference of anti-cuts groups - growing across the UK.
| Thousands of leaflets to give to the public en route.
| Blocks of supporters with their own distinctive sections of the march!... showing their numbers, strength and particular message.
| |||
| Imagine how the public would view a contingent of uniformed lollipop ladies, with lollipops - followed by a group of uniformed firefighters, then nurses and health workers, then rail staff, then social workers, etc. Or twenty librarians carrying 'defend libraries' placards and giant books. Or twenty former Connexions workers with their own placards. Community centre users with 'save our community centre' . Or twenty users of the services for the blind or deaf, marching together ...and so on. Posties pushing their bicycles. Carers in a giant group carrying 'We care - show you do' .
| In total we will be hundreds - showing the breadth of our support against the cuts.
| |||
| We are already receiving pledges:
| |||
| Community groups and unions are committing to the event.
| Students will provide a lively noisy block of support
| Stop the War Coalition has pledged a contingent carrying identical ' Welfare not Warfare' placards.
| |||
| |||
| MAKE PLANS NOW to bring your work colleagues, community group, faith group, family and friends.
| |||
| Send around the pledge message below, or use text or Facebook etc.
| If you are in work: contact your colleagues and agree to come as a team. Make some placards. Make it a day out.
| If you are in a Community Group: phone around and arrange to come together - with your banner proudly flying with your own messages.
| From outside Norwich? This is a Norfolk-wide event and everyone is welcome. Bring signs to show us where you are from.
| If not in any group: come alone or bring friends and family - this is a peaceful protest by the whole community of Norfolk.
| You can download posters and leaflets from the website below.
| |||
| |||
| Demonstrations don't change things by themselves. We know this. The demo is part of a programme of events and increasing resistance to the cuts. Anti-cuts campaigns are growing across the UK. Such protests build confidence, inform and gain attention. The growing protests are building pressure on the government for change. Come along and be part of a local - and national - demand for a change of direction.
| There is no need for these cuts and we can make government and councils change their plans.
| |||
| |||
| Assemble Saturday, 4 December 2010, 12 noon at Chapelfield Gardens, Norwich.
