Dr. Lee Marsden from the School of Political, Social and International Studies at UEA, will talk about the influence of the growing Christian right-wingers in the US and the effect they are having on American military policy. This is one of Lee's special subjects and he has written a book on the topic: For God's Sake - The Christian Right and US Foreign Policy .

A personal story of 'Courage Vision and Hope' of the early life of Dr

Mohamed Altawil, who was born in a refugee camp in Gaza and of the

dramatic rescue of his family when the wall was smashed down in 2008.

He came to the UK from Palestine on a Ford Foundation Scholarship for

doctoral research on the effects of chronic traumatic experience on

the children of Gaza. He is prevented from returning to his homeland

but continues his work through the Palestine Trauma Centre (UK), which he

founded. 'Journey Through Thorns' is written and presented by

The film follows the life of film-maker David Bond, who upon receiving a

letter from HMRC informing him that his daughter's details were amongst

the 25 million lost by the child benefit agency, embarks on a journey to

discover just how much information is held about him by government and

private companies. Along the way David meets people who have been caught

in the crossfire of the database state, some who have had their lives

shattered.  After the screening there will be a discussion taken by

PHILOSOPHY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Public Lecture Series 2010

Environmental concerns are at the centre of current attention. The

Autumn 2010 series of Public Lectures will engage with fascinating

questions that these concerns raise from a philosophical

perspective. What is our own place as human beings in nature?
 +
What do we even mean when speaking about the natural
 +
environment? What is the relationship between environmental
 +
science and philosophy? Are there any links between the beauty of
 +
nature and its moral value?
 +
This year’s speakers are philosophers, environmentalists and

environmentally engaged journalists. Mary Midgley, renowned moral
 +
philosopher, known for her work on science, ethics and animal
 +
rights will launch the series. Steven Poole, author and writer on
 +
environmental issues for The Guardian, will investigate how talk of
 +
such things as 'natural resources', 'the environment' and
 +
'climate change' systematically obscures the real nature of
 +
nature. Kate Rawles, who teaches in the School of Outdoor Studies
 +
at Cumbria University, will tell us about her understanding of
 +
‘outdoor philosophy’. Two debates complete the series: UEA
 +
philosophers Angela Breitenbach and Tom Greaves will discuss

whether the experience of natural beauty can inform our moral

concern for the environment, while Mike Hulme, Professor of Climate

Change (UEA), will engage with UEA philosopher Rupert Read in a
