The charge against Joe has been reduced from desertion to absence without leave which carries a maximum sentence of 2 years. He wrote to the Prime Minister stating:- "It is my primary concern that the courage and tenacity of my fellow soldiers has become a tool of American foreign policy. The war in Afghanistan is not reducing the terrorist risk – far from improving Afghan lives, it is bringing death and devastation to their country. Britain has no business there. I do not believe that our cause in Afghanistan is just or right. I implore you, sir, to bring our troops home." Examining how the Bush administration turned its back on domestic and international law, rounding up prisoners in Afghanistan and Pakistan without adequate screening and often for large bounty payments. Focusing on the stories of three prisoners, Shaker Aamer, Binyam Mohamed and Omar Deghayes, 'Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo' is powerful rebuke to the myth that Guantánamo holds “the worst of the worst”. Spectacle Productions, 2009; 75 mins., directed by Polly Nash and Andy Worthington http://www.spectacle.co.uk/outside-the-law-stories-from-guantanamo Followed by Q & A session with '''Andy Worthington''' (journalist and author) and '''Omar Deghayes''' (former prisoner) The tour of the film is in association with The Guantanamo Justice Campaign, Spectacle and Andy Worthington. The film reveals how complicated and compromised the once simple process of growing crops and raising livestock to feed ourselves and our families has become. But, it also reminds us that despite what appears to be at times a hopeless situation, each of us still has the ability to vote on this issue every day at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Those who knew her will be left with an Ilse shaped hole, but also with the inspiration of a woman who endured losses such as nobody should ever have to deal with, and who lived out the ‘never again’ testimony by refusing bitterness, by faithful, determined and above compassionate activism for peace and justice. Ilse grew up in Breslau, Germany, which is now Wroclaw in Poland. She came to England as a Kindertransport in 1938, when child protection meant putting your child on a train and praying for their survival, when your own was unlikely. Ilse's parents perished in the holocaust. Ilse led a very active life until age and frailty got the better of her. Among other things, Ilse was a teacher, active in CND, Mothers for Peace, Mothers’ Union, Christian Aid, her own family and Search for meaning, adventures in religion Above all, Ilse will be remembered for the loving and generous spirit she showed everyone, because of everything. ------------------------- ==Saturday 13th March, 7pm Belvedere Centre -Curly Blows it Dry- for The Grapes Hill Community Garden Group== Belvoir St, Norwich, NR2 3AZ Fabulous 7 PieceJump/Jive Swing Band Licensed Bar and Garden Area/Fully Accessible Venue Tickets £6 in advance, £8 on the door - 01603 616894 or contact@grapeshillcommunitygarden.org More info at: http://www.grapeshillcommunitygarden.org ----------------------------------- {{Norwich Scoop footer|}}
