Copenhagen UN summit: ‘The most important meeting in history’ In December 2009 in Copenhagen (Denmark) the world’s governments will meet for what may be the last chance to agree on joint global actions to cut greenhouse gases, to prevent runaway global warming. This is being called ‘the most important meeting in history’. Millions of people are pressing their governments to do more – and to agree the best policies at Copenhagen, even if some powerful oil, bio-fuel and aviation businesses oppose this. The series will be launched by the philosopher Baroness Mary Warnock, prolific writer and broadcaster, and former member of the House of Lords Select Committee on Euthanasia, and the Parliamentary Committee of Enquiry into Human Fertilisation and Embryology. Human rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith, renowned for his work on behalf of prisoners on Death Row in the U.S.A., will talk on "Torture and the Secret Prisons". In his lecture UEA philosopher Jerry Goodenough challenges us to think more clearly about abortion. Jonathan Glover, Professor of Philosophy at King's College, London, author of Causing Death and Saving Lives and Humanity: A Moral History of the Twentieth Century, shows how internecine strife is born out of the narratives which sustain the identities of Israel and Palestine. This lecture is open to all and discusses the legacy left by Norfolk-born Thomas Paine. This year's lecture commemorates 200 years since Thomas Paine's death. It will be celebrating Paine's life and the ways in which his views have influenced the "rights of man" in today's world. During a varied career, Tariq Ali has been a novelist, historian, screenwriter, political campaigner, social commentator and regular writer for The Guardian. He is a long-standing editor of the New Left Review and a political commentator published on every continent.
