In April 1914, Kitty and Tom Higdon, loved and respected teachers at Burston Village School, were sacked for their socialist and trade union views. The pupils walked out in support and from then until 1939 the villagers and the Higdons, ran the 'Strike School', providing an education for local children. Times change, but the struggle in rural areas for economic and social justice continues. This year at Burston we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cuban revolution, with music, speakers, and special children's activities. Speakers include Tony Benn, and Luis Marron (Cuban Embassy) Burston Strike School - the longest strike in history Organised by Unite with the support of SERTUC, Thompsons Solicitors and the Burston Strike School Trustees http://www.tuc.org.uk/the_tuc/tuc-16545-f0.cfm?regional=7 -------------------------- ==Greenpeace Fair, Sun Sept. 6th, 11am-midnight, Hulver Farm, St.Michael South Elmham== This year is the '''20th anniversary of the Fair''' and there will be some BIG CHANGES! If the changes work the Fair will continue for many years to come. If they don't it may be the last Fair. We want to make it a GREEN fair. We want to be able to continue running the Fair but if we don't get a lot less cars the fair will die! The good news is that admission to the Fair will be by voluntary donation! Car parking will be charged at £20 per vehicle regardless of the number of occupants. If you come by car with 3 or 4 people this will be great value. If you come on your own you may wish you had caught the bus! There will be a registered bus service from Bungay and from Halesworth and buses will run every half hour during the day and then every hour right up until 11pm. There will be a huge cycle parking area, and we expect to have organised cycle rides from neighbouring towns. The Zero Carbon Caravan is a group of people cycling to from Wales to Copenhagen. The Zero Carbon Caravan passes through Norfolk in mid to late September. http://www.zerocarboncaravan.net/wordpress/ On 19th September we cycle to Norwich, where we will have an improvised environmental opera, the ‘Carbon Chronicles’. ===Carbon Chronicles Opera, Sat. Sept 19th, 7pm, United Reform Church=== Carbon Chronicles is a participatory opera blending science, myth and politics. It is intended to provoke discussion and inspire action to reduce our dependency on a petroleum-based, exploitative global system, in order to live sustainably in a low-carbon society. The story is about elemental beings and their evolution into resources (minerals and fossil fuels) exploited by humans, with the consequent planetary crisis and climate chaos. The ending is decided by the participants. The opera is written so that anyone at any age can take part, even without prior musical experience, with time before each performance to learn simple tunes and choruses, and to make musical instruments from recycled and 'found' materials. A small core group will tour the piece around Britain and Ireland, collaborating with the transition town network and other groups, and working with local musicians. A national gathering in 2010 will bring together all participating groups to recreate a grand story of our times. http://www.apeuk.org/p001.php?page=p0156. ===Zero Carbon Festival, with -Seize the Day-, Sun Sept 20th, 2pm-5pm, Chapelfield Gardens=== [[Image:Seize_the_day.jpg|300px|left]] Bold, Beautiful Folk Concert by '''Seize the Day''' http://www.seizetheday.org/ ... and a family friendly zero carbon festival in Chapelfield Gardens http://www.bbc.co.uk/norfolk/funstuff/360/chapelfield_gardens.shtml organised by the local Friends of the Earth http://www.foenorwich.org.uk/, with stalls for campaigning organisations and those selling green goods and climate friendly food (local, organic). ===Talk by Clive Hamilton, Mon Sept 21st, morning, UEA=== An international video conference linking Clive Hamilton http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Hamilton (author of ‘Growth Fetish’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Growth_Fetish) in Australia with a number of people from Norwich, just to prove that you can have an international conference without flying.
